Days 9-12 of Easter

I haven't been updating about our Easter activities over the last few days, but we've still been celebrating. Each day, we continued with our resurrection eggs by reviewing previous ones and adding a new one to our tree.

Here's a picture of Josiah praying after our devotion time...Precious!We went to an Easter egg hunt at a local church on Saturday. Of course, after having beautiful weather all week, it decided to start raining just as they went out to hunt eggs!

They both won the prize baskets for their age groups! I was somewhat suprised because they both tend to be observers and a little on the poky side. They were proud!

One day, we colored and decorated eggs. Josiah enjoyed putting stickers on the eggs and dumping the bowls of colored water the best. Lexy sat for a long time to work and wanted more eggs when they were finished.

On one day, they made Easter cards for some family and friends. They used their thumbprints to make bunnies. Lexy drew her own bunnies. I drew Josiah's for him. On the outside the cards read "Some Bunnies love you." On the inside they read "Happy Easter." Lexy signed her own name. She insists on signing "Lexy" now instead of "Alexis." Here's a poor picture of the cards:

On Easter morning, Lexy woke up sick. She still managed to get in on some of the Easter festivities throughout the day. We started the morning with making Resurrection Rolls. We found this idea last year at Hubbard's Cupboard. They placed a marshmallow inside of a crescent roll. Then we rolled the crescent rolls tightly to form a tomb. After baking, when we opened up the rolls, the marshmallow was gone!

Josiah looked back and forth from the dough to his marshamallow trying to decide if he wanted to help. He made his choice...

We set guards in front of the tomb to keep watch.

As we waited for our Resurrection Rolls to cook, they opened their Easter baskets. All Josiah really cared about was the candy. I finally took the stuff out of his basket so that he would look at it. His favorite (apart from the candy) was his Handy Manny ball. Lexy liked her new zhu zhu hamster and her dot-to-dot book.

After church, we went to Mama and Papa's house where we took pictures, had Easter dinner, colored eggs, had our annual egg hunt and lots of fun!

The kids enjoyed looking through their Easter basket from Mama and Papa. Notice that a normal sized basket would not do. A laundry basket was required! This must be why Lexy always wants to know why Mama and Papa spoil her so much...but I don't think she minds!
We dyed and decorated some hard-boiled eggs for the egg hunt.

Before crashing on the couch for the rest of the day, Lexy joined in the egg hunt.

Josiah found an egg in the garden plot!

While hunting for Easter eggs, my oh-so-kind brother found a toad in the pond and dropped it down my shirt. It was so nice that everyone stood back to laugh and take pictures. Finally, my cousin came to the rescue!

Josiah enjoyed blowing bubbles in the backyard. He was blowing so hard that I'm suprised he didn't faint!
Every year, our family hosts a gingerbread house competition between the boys and girls on the day of our family Christmas. Due to sickness on the day of our family Christmas, we were unable to do the gingerbread houses. So, we moved the competition to Easter. This is the winning (girls!) Easter cottage!

We had a lot of fun celebrating Easter this year. Through the use of the Resurrection eggs, the books we read, and our discussions, I really feel that Lexy is understanding the love of Jesus more deeply.

Days 8-9 of Easter

Josiah came down with some kind of bug and ran a fever for a few days. So, our Easter plans didn't go exaclty as planned, but we managed to get some things done.

Resurrection Eggs: We focused on the cross and the dice.

Lexy helped to make Easter cookies.

I taught Lexy's Rainbow class at church. For a craft, we painted tin foil eggs.

Lexy's finished egg. She didn't want to make designs in the paint.
We kept things fairly simple and just colored a cross. I was suprised that Josiah willingly sat for about 10 minutes and colored. While coloring, Lexy said, "I'm not going to draw Jesus on the cross cause I'm going to show this to Him when we go to heaven on Tuesday."

Notice in the following picture that Lexy's grip is finally improving!

The 7th Day of Easter

We picked back up with more Easter activities today. Our symbol from the egg today was the spear. Alex read the story from the Bible. Our book to add to the basket was "Fancy Nancy's Elegant Easter." They also watched Veggie Tales Easter Carol. I was suprised that there was a part of this movie that Lexy wanted me to skip because it was "too scary." She is very sensitive when it comes to watching movies.
I downloaded a lot of Easter activities from Home Grown Hearts. This blog is full of resources! Josiah matched the colored eggs to the correct colored basket. Unfortunately, I didn't get a picture. This was the first time he was interested in matching colors. I was beginning to wonder if he was color blind. Today, he did it easily. Yeah! Here are some other activities that we did this afternoon.

Lexy practiced patterns using the ABC egg patterns.

Lexy practiced writing her numbers using the Easter Number Handwriting Practice.

Lexy reviewed numbers by playing this game. She drew a number and placed the correct number of eggs in the basket.

Alexis and Josiah each attend a library class on Tuesday nights. This week, both classes focused on Easter activities.
They created Easter bonnets out of paper plates as a craft for the storytime.

Days 4-6 of Easter

We had a slow few days of Easter activities due to Lexy's birthday party. We continued on with our resurrection eggs and Bible lessons, but we did not do any extra activities. Now that things are getting back to normal, hopefully we can have a lot of Easter fun this week.

Each day, Josiah opened up the egg to reveal the Easter symbol, and Lexy hung the symbol on the tree.

After talking about our symbol for the day, Daddy read the story from the Bible.

On day 6, our symbol was a purple cloth to represent the purple robe that the soldiers placed on Jesus. For our craft, the children painted half of a styrofoam ball green and placed a cross made out of popsicle sticks on it. On the cross, we placed a purple ribbon to remind us that Jesus is our King.

This is their finished projects.

The 3rd Day of Easter

We were busy most of the day preparing for Lexy's birthday party tomorrow, but we did manage to get in some Easter fun!

Josiah placed our 3rd ornament, a dime, onto the tree. We read the story of the Last Supper and Judas' betrayal of Jesus.

We talked about how Judas betrayed Jesus for 30 pieces of Silver. We decided to give Jesus 30 pieces of silver. Lexy counted out 30 silver coins to put in a gift box. She will take her gift to church on Sunday to give to Jesus.

Easter Craft: They each made foam magnets to put on the refrigerator. I should've taken a picture of the finished product. Notice Josiah used the little chick's feet as its eyes. I couldn't convince him otherwise. It turned out precious!

Book Basket: We read "I love You, My Bunnies" by Laura Driscoll and added it to our Easter Book Basket books.

2nd Day of Easter AND Lexy's Birthday

Our 2nd day of Easter was shared today with Lexy's 4th Birthday! We did a few Easter activities, but also had fun celebrating her birthday as a family. I can't believe that my baby is four! She will have her "baby doll party" this Saturday and is very excited. Check back for pictures!

We started our morning with our Resurrection Eggs. We reviewed the palm branch ornament and then hung the cup ornament. We read and talked about the last supper.

Next, the children painted some Easter decorations to hang. Once again, Josiah lasted only a few minutes before he was done painting. I've never met a child that didn't enjoy painting until him. He did enjoy dumping his water cup out twice during his 5 minutes of painting. Lexy, my little artist, worked contently for at least half an hour.

Book Basket: Our book today was "The Easter Story" by Patricia A. Pingry. I thought this was a good book for sharing about Jesus' life, God's love, and Jesus' death and resurrection. It was simple enough for a preschooler to grasp.

Easter Movie: I let them pick an Easter movie to watch today. They picked Easter with Max and Ruby.

The rest of the day was full. Lexy took some treats to her ballet class to celebrate her birthday. Then we had lunch at Daddy's work. Mama and Papa came over for cake and ice cream in the evening. She is very excited about being four...a little more excited than I am about it. She was really excited about her two new Madeline movies that Mama and Papa got for her. She will open her gifts from us at her party on Saturday.

On the First Day of Easter...

Our Homemade Resurrection Eggs

We had a set of resurrection eggs last year, but the children have played with them so much that the pieces have been lost. I was not willing to pay $17.99 for another set, so I made our own. There were lots of sites with ideas for homemade eggs, and I used a combination of different ideas that I found.

I used the carton from our store bought kit, but there were really cute ideas for decorating your own carton. I used eggs from the dollar store and wrote the numbers 1-12 on them. Inside, I placed the object for that day attached to a piece of yarn. Also inside each egg is Scripture verse for that object.

Our Objects and verses include:

1. A small branch with leaf -Matthew 21:8

2. Communion Cup - Matthew 26:1
3. Dime - Matthew 26:14-15
4. Feather - Matthew 26:34
5. Knotted piece of rope - Matthew 27:1-2

6. Purple cloth - Matthew 27:28
7. Cross - Matthew 27:31-32

8. Dice - Matthew 27:35-36

9. Sponge - Matthew 27:34

10. Spear - John 19:33-34
11. Rock - Matthew 28: 2

12. Empty Egg - Matthew 28:5-6

Our Homemade Easter Tree

Each day, the children open the egg for that day and place it on our Easter tree. We talk about the meaning of the object and read the Scripture verse. They also put the Scripture verse in the tree.

I got the idea for the Easter Tree from here.

To make our Easter tree, we found a branch from our yard. As I painted the branch white, the children painted the pot to put it in. They also painted some rocks from our yard to put in the pot.

It is definitly not the fanciest of Easter trees, but they worked hard. It serves it's purpose for us, and they are really excited about hanging the ornaments on it each day.

Our First Day activities...

After opening the first egg, talking about it, and hanging it on the tree, I had some more things planned for the kids.

We decorated their bedroom windows with Easter-themed window clings. Josiah had Cars, and Lexy had Tinker Bell. They thought these were great. Throughout the day, I would find Lexy in one of the rooms telling stories with the window clings using them like felt board pieces.

Lexy also colored a picture of the triumphal entry. I've been really proud of her coloring effort lately. She is taking her time and not rushing through it.

Book Basket: I've decided to do our book basket a little different this time. Each day I will read a new Easter/Spring themed book to them and add it to their basket, rather than having them all out in the basket to begin with. It seems like it takes the excitment out of reading the book for the first time when they've already looked through them all. So, we'll see how it goes. Today's book was "The Berenstain Bears and the Real Easter Eggs." Lexy has always enjoyed Berenstain Bear books.

We read the story of the triumphal entry using our large picture set. It is great having a mother who was a children's pastor for many years. We have tons of Bible resources!

The kids took donkey rides on Daddy and had a little parade.

Lexy did a puzzle/maze sheet. She had to get Jesus to Jerusalem following the pattern.

It was a great "first day of Easter" and I'm looking forward to the next 11 days! To see the other days, click the following links...
